Opening a betr account takes a couple of minutes. Getting it usable takes longer, and that gap is where nearly every complaint about this bookie starts. Since 29 September 2024 an Australian operator must establish who you are before the account exists — not within 72 hours of it, not before your first payout. A review site still saying “verification within 72 hours” hasn’t been touched in two years.
Below: what to have ready, what betr checks, what to do when the electronic match fails, and the setting worth configuring in the first five minutes. For the wider picture, read our full assessment of what betr is like to bet with.
What to have ready before you start
The betr sign up form is short. It stalls when you leave it to hunt for a document, so collect these first:

- Photo ID. An Australian driver licence or passport, card in hand: you may need the card number, the state of issue and, on newer licences, the reference number on the back.
- Your residential address as it appears on official records. Not a PO box, and not your parents’ place if you’ve moved.
- An Australian mobile number you can receive an SMS on right now. It becomes your two-factor channel and the route for Blackbook alerts later.
- A debit card, PayID or PayPal account in your own name. Credit cards have been illegal for online wagering here since June 2024. Full list: funding the account with PayID, PayPal or a debit card.
- Being 18 or older. betr age verification runs against government records rather than the honour system.
The betr registration process, step by step
betr’s own wording is that “The whole process only takes 2 minutes to complete”, and on a clean electronic match that’s roughly accurate. The flow is the same on web and in the app.
- Open the join form. Top right on desktop; first screen in the app.
- Enter your email and set a password. Use an address you’ll keep, because recovery and withdrawal confirmations go through it.
- Enter your legal name exactly as printed on your ID. This one field causes the most failed checks: “Dave” on the form and “David” on the licence is a mismatch, and the system doesn’t guess.
- Enter your date of birth in day-month-year order. A month-day date is a common way to fail an age check while being comfortably over 18.
- Enter your address and mobile number, then confirm the SMS code.
- Complete the identity check before the account opens. This is not an optional final screen.
- Deposit and set your limits once verification clears. The wrong order here is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
Start on the website and finish on your phone if you like; the account carries over. Our page on downloading the betr sports betting app covers the install; if it won’t accept your details afterwards, the fixes are on log in to your betr account for the first time.
betr ID verification: the rule that changed in 2024
AUSTRAC removed the arrangement that let bookmakers open an account first and verify afterwards. From 29 September 2024, identity verification must be completed before the account is opened and before the first bet is placed. Every licensed Australian operator works this way, so betr isn’t being awkward.
There are two paths. First, an electronic check: name, date of birth and address matched against government and credit-bureau records. It takes seconds and you never see it — the form just moves on. The second opens when something doesn’t line up, and betr asks for a document.
Roughly how that splits, so a manual review doesn’t feel like an accusation:
Read that chart as an illustrative estimate of a typical industry split, not published betr statistics. No Australian bookmaker releases verification outcome data. The shape makes one point: a manual review is ordinary rather than a red flag. The obligations behind it are on our how betr handles KYC and AML obligations page.
Documents accepted for verification
Not every document proves the same thing, which is why one item isn’t always enough. Photo ID covers who you are; a bill covers where you live.
| Document type | Examples | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Primary photo ID | Australian driver licence (front and back), Australian or foreign passport | Name, date of birth, photo likeness |
| Secondary government ID | Medicare card, proof-of-age card, Keypass | Name and date of birth after a partial match |
| Proof of address | Utility bill, rates notice or bank statement from the last three months | Current residential address |
| Selfie with ID | Photo of you holding the document you uploaded | That the document is yours |
| Proof of payment method | Bank statement header, or card image with middle digits covered | That the funding account is in your name |
Cover the middle digits of a card, never the name. Redacting the wrong part turns one resubmission into two.
Verify before you deposit, not after
This is the advice worth the page: clear verification completely before the first dollar goes in, and preferably before the first bet.
The causal chain behind most payout complaints here runs like this. A punter opens an account, deposits, bets, wins, requests a withdrawal — and only then does an outstanding identity or source-of-funds check surface. The account sits frozen mid-payout while documents get emailed back and forth. It feels like a bookie stalling on a winner. Usually it’s an unfinished check arriving at the worst moment.
You can’t remove that risk, but you can move it to where it costs nothing but ten minutes: verify while your balance is zero. The payout stage itself is covered in getting money out of a betr account.
If verification fails
A failed check isn’t a rejection. It’s the electronic match not finding you, which happens constantly to people who’ve recently moved, recently married, or go by a shortened name.
- Compare your name to the document character by character, apostrophes included: O’Brien and OBrien are two different people to a matching engine.
- Check the date of birth for a transposed day and month.
- Reshoot the document. Flat surface, all four corners in frame, no glare across the hologram, no fingers over the text, both sides of a licence.
- Contact support with the error reference on screen: 1800 002 387 or [email protected].
Registration errors and how to fix them
| Error | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “We couldn’t verify your details” | Name or address doesn’t match government records | Re-enter the name exactly as printed on your ID; add a current proof of address |
| Age check fails despite being over 18 | Date entered month-day-year | Re-enter as day-month-year |
| Document upload rejected | Glare, cropped corners, expired document | Reshoot flat, all four corners visible, in-date document |
| “An account already exists” | Duplicates aren’t permitted — one per person | Recover the original instead of opening a second |
| Registration blocked by location | Signing up from outside Australia | Register while in Australia; the licence covers residents |
| Deposit declined after a clean sign-up | Credit card used, or issuer blocking gambling merchants | Switch to a debit card, PayID or PayPal |
Is there a betr sign-up code?
The join form may show a promo code field, and that field is not evidence of an offer. Advertising an inducement to open an account (bonus bets, matched deposits, sign-up credit) is prohibited across every Australian jurisdiction. No legitimate site can publish a working betr sign-up code; any that claims to is describing an overseas product or inventing it.
What exists instead are promotions for existing account holders, covered on our page on how betr promotions are advertised to Australian customers. Leave the field blank unless betr has sent you something directly.
Set your deposit limit on day one
What are you prepared to lose today? Set a deposit limit. Every licensed operator must offer one, and betr keeps it in account settings. The asymmetry is deliberate: lowering a limit applies immediately, raising one is held for a cooling-off period. Set it low on day one. You lose nothing, because tightening later is instant while loosening gets slowed on purpose.
Two more things while you’re in there. Turn on activity statements: deposits, turnover and net position, less comfortable than memory and more accurate. And BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register, blocks you across every licensed Australian operator at once, not just this one. Both sit under deposit limits, activity statements and self-exclusion at betr.
What punters criticise about opening a betr account
Now the criticism. betr’s public scores are poor: 1.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 26 reviews, 1.2 out of 5 on ProductReview from 71. Small samples, and satisfied punters rarely file reviews at all. But the pattern inside them is consistent, and it clusters around accounts rather than odds.
The recurring complaints: document requests arriving late rather than at sign-up, accounts restricted shortly after a big win, support threads unanswered for weeks. Some of that is the industry-wide practice of limiting winning customers, which no bookmaker advertises. Some is verification handled at withdrawal instead of registration. You can’t fix the first. The second takes ten minutes on the day you join.
FAQ
How do I sign up for betr?
Open the join form on the site or in the app, enter your email, legal name, date of birth, address and mobile number, confirm the SMS code, then verify your identity. On a clean electronic match the account is live in about two minutes.
What documents do I need to open a betr account?
Usually none. The electronic check against government records handles most applications. When it doesn’t match, betr asks for a driver licence or passport, sometimes a recent proof of address, occasionally a selfie holding the document.
How long does betr verification take?
The electronic check is effectively instant. A manual review depends on your image quality and the queue; betr publishes no service-level target, so treat same-day as normal and chase support beyond that.
Can I bet on betr before verifying my identity?
No. Since 29 September 2024 verification must be completed before the account is opened and before the first bet. The old “verify within 72 hours” arrangement no longer exists in Australia.
Is there a betr sign-up bonus or promo code?
No. Advertising inducements to open a betting account is prohibited under Australian law, so there is no public welcome offer and no working sign-up code. Promotions run for existing customers only.
Can I have two betr accounts?
No, one per person. A second, even under a name variant or different email, gets caught by the identity check and can put both at risk. Lost access? Recover the original through support.
