Funding a betting account should be the boring part, and at betr it usually is. The minimum is $5, the bookmaker doesn’t clip a fee off the top, and on the instant methods the money lands before you’ve finished reading the market. When it goes wrong, the cause is almost never betr’s cashier. It’s a bank blocking the transaction, verification that was never finished, or a card that stopped being legal for betting here in 2024.
Money moving the other way runs on different timelines and has its own problems; that’s covered in how fast betr pays out.

betr deposit methods at a glance
Six methods are live. Two that plenty of review sites still list are not, and they stay in the table with their real status.
| Method | Minimum | Funds available | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PayID | $5 | Seconds | None from betr | Fastest route; needs a PayID registered with your bank |
| Debit Visa / Mastercard | $5 | Instant | None from betr | Card must draw on your own transaction account |
| Apple Pay | $5 | Instant | None from betr | iOS and Safari; uses the debit card in your Wallet |
| Google Pay | $5 | Instant | None from betr | Android and Chrome; same debit-card rule applies |
| PayPal | $5 | Instant | None from betr | PayPal account must be in your own name |
| Bank transfer | $5 | 1–48 hours | None from betr | Clearing time depends on your bank, not on betr |
| Credit cards / credit lines | — | — | — | Banned by law since June 2024 |
| POLi | — | — | — | Service closed in Australia, 30 September 2023 |
The $5 minimum, fees and daily caps
The $5 minimum is as low as this market goes, and betr charges no fee on any of the six live options. There’s no default daily cap either: the only ceilings are your own bank’s and any limit you’ve set yourself.
Credit cards: gone, and not coming back
You cannot deposit at betr with a credit card or a credit line, and arguing with support won’t change it. The national ban took effect in June 2024 under the National Consumer Protection Framework and binds every licensed wagering operator in the country.
The reasoning is blunt: betting with borrowed money turns a losing night into a debt with interest attached. Digital wallets are no loophole. If the card behind your Apple Pay or Google Pay is a credit card, the payment dies at the same gate.
POLi doesn’t exist any more
POLi was the bank-transfer workaround Australian bookmakers leaned on for years. Australia Post shut it down on 30 September 2023. It isn’t offered at betr, it isn’t offered anywhere else in this market, and it isn’t coming back.
Plenty of “betr payment methods” pages published in 2026 still list it, copied from an older review that copied an older one. If a site says POLi works at betr, treat the rest of it with the same suspicion.
PayID: the fastest way to fund an account in Australia
PayID is the standout and the first method we’d point a new account holder to. It runs on the New Payments Platform, which settles between Australian banks in close to real time, 24 hours a day, weekends and public holidays included. There is no card network in the middle, so no decline to troubleshoot.
Setup is a one-off job in your banking app: link an identifier you already own (usually a mobile number or email address) to your transaction account. After that the deposit is picked in betr’s cashier, confirmed in the app and credited in seconds. The PayID has to be registered to you, not to a partner or a mate.
Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards
Apple Pay and Google Pay are the smoothest options on mobile: authorisation is a fingerprint or a face scan rather than a typed card number. Behind the scenes they still push a debit transaction: debit only, in your own name. Straight debit Visa and Mastercard deposits are instant too.
Cards fail more often than anything else here, and the reason isn’t betr: several major Australian banks now ship a gambling block customers can switch on in the app. Once it’s on, the transaction is refused at the bank end. betr never sees the money and support can’t override it.
Bank transfer: the slow lane
A standard bank transfer still works, with a clearing window of 1 to 48 hours depending on which bank sends it and when. It’s the only method where you should expect to wait.
The bank transfer bar sits at 1,440 minutes, or 24 hours, so it reads on the same scale as the instant methods. Treat it as the midpoint of the 1 to 48 hour range, not a promise: a Friday afternoon transfer can sit until Monday.
Get verified before you deposit, not after
Since 29 September 2024, AUSTRAC requires identity verification to be completed before an account is opened and before the first bet is placed. betr runs an automated check against your name, date of birth and address at signup; if that can’t match you, it asks for a driver licence, passport or a selfie holding your ID.
The most useful advice here: finish verification before you put money in. A deposit will often go through on a partly verified account, but that account then sits where a payout can be held while documents get chased. Our betr KYC and AML verification requirements page lists the accepted documents, and the betr account registration process walks through the form.
The account has to be in your own name
Every deposit must come from a payment method held in the same name as the betting account. A partner’s card, a mate’s PayPal, a transfer from a joint account you’re not on will all be rejected, and one that slips through can trigger a review that freezes the balance.
That’s anti-money-laundering law: third-party funding is the pattern regulators watch for. The same principle shapes how betr handles your payment details, covered on the betr account security and data protection page.
When a betr deposit doesn’t work
“betr deposit not working” is one of the most searched phrases around this bookmaker. The cause is almost always one of six things, and the fix is usually two minutes at your bank rather than a support ticket.
| Why it failed | What to do about it |
|---|---|
| Credit card used instead of debit | Switch to a debit card, PayID or PayPal. No workaround exists — the ban is legislated |
| Bank gambling block switched on | Check the controls in your banking app; some banks enforce a cool-off before the block can be lifted |
| Verification not finished | Upload the requested ID and wait for confirmation before retrying |
| Name mismatch between card and account | Use a payment method registered in your own name; third-party deposits are refused by law |
| Your own deposit limit reached | Check the limit in account settings. A reduction applies immediately; an increase does not |
| Bank’s daily transaction ceiling hit | Raise it in your banking app, or split the deposit across two days |
Deposit limits are worth setting before you fund
Every licensed Australian operator has to offer voluntary deposit limits, and betr’s sit in account settings. You nominate a ceiling over a chosen period; hit it, and nothing more goes in until the window resets.
The asymmetry is deliberate. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately. Raising one doesn’t, because the increase is held for a cooling-off period, so a decision made in the middle of a bad run can’t be undone in the middle of it. Work out what you’re prepared to lose before you fund the account, then set the limit to match. More in our betr responsible gambling tools rundown.
Where the real complaints are
We’ll be straight about this, because most review sites aren’t. Deposits are not what punters complain about at betr. The criticism lands on the way out.
betr holds 1.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 26 reviews and 1.2 out of 5 from 71 reviews on ProductReview.com.au, with recurring themes of delayed or withheld withdrawals, document requests that appear only once a payout is asked for, and accounts restricted after a win. Those are poor scores and we’re not dressing them up. It also explains the verification-first advice above, since the horror stories usually start with an account funded and bet on before it was ever checked.
If a payment problem needs escalating, the betr customer service contact numbers page has the direct lines, and our betr sportsbook review weighs the cashier against everything else the betr betting platform puts in front of you.
