Ask who owns betr and the answer depends on which betr you mean. The Australian one (betr.com.au, the bookie fielding bets on Flemington and the AFL) is operated by betr Entertainment Aus Pty Ltd, ABN 42 607 521 835, whose parent betr Entertainment Limited trades on the Australian Securities Exchange under the ticker BBT. The American betr, at betr.app, is a fantasy pick’em outfit Jake Paul helped launch. Different company, different rules.
That mix-up costs punters money, and we come back to it below. First the paper trail: who signs your terms, who holds the licence, and how a bookmaker founded in 2015 ended up with a name it only adopted in 2024.
The company behind betr.com.au
The entity you actually transact with is betr Entertainment Aus Pty Ltd: the name on the self-exclusion forms, the App Store developer line and the ABN register. That ABN was registered on 7 August 2015, GST-registered from 1 October 2015, and still shows Active. Which tells you something useful: the company is a decade old, it just wasn’t always called betr.

Above it sits betr Entertainment Limited, the ASX-listed parent, called BlueBet Holdings Ltd until April 2025. Nothing about the business changed on the day the name did — only the letterhead moved.

The betr corporate timeline
The history trips up a lot of writers, so here it is plainly. Neither company founded the other: two separate businesses merged, and the group kept the newer name.

How the merger split the company
The April 2024 deal was a share issue, not a cash takeover. BlueBet, the listed side that held the licence and the platform, issued 265.4 million new shares to betr’s shareholders, handing them roughly 56.9 per cent of the combined company.
Read that 43.1 per cent carefully: it is the residual before the A$20 million capital raise announced alongside the merger, not a final register. New money dilutes everyone, so post-raise holdings differ from the headline split. For today’s register, the ASX filings are the only source worth quoting.
Who runs betr today
Michael Sullivan, the man who started BlueBet in 2015 and co-founded betr in 2022, is executive chairman. Matt Tripp, the other betr co-founder and one of the more recognisable names in Australian wagering, sits on the board as a non-executive director. Bill Richmond, who ran BlueBet as chief executive before the merger, moved into the chief operating officer role.
The founders of both halves stayed — unusual after a merger this size, and it explains why the group behaves like BlueBet’s operation wearing betr’s marketing.
Why the Android app is still called au.com.bluebet
Here is the tell that no press release will give you. Open the Google Play listing and the package identifier reads au.com.bluebet. Not betr. Bluebet.
Android package names are permanent: change one and you have shipped a brand-new app every existing user must reinstall from scratch. When the product was rebranded on 14 August 2024 the platform stayed BlueBet’s, so the package stayed too. Was the rebrand a technology merger or a new skin over old infrastructure? That string answers it. What the app actually does is covered on our the betr mobile app page.
What an ASX listing means for you
A company on the ASX files audited accounts, publishes turnover and margin, and must disclose material changes (acquisitions, capital raises, licence moves, failed takeovers) as they happen. Every date in the table above exists because the company had to say it out loud. An offshore operator with no disclosure regime tells you whatever it feels like, which is usually nothing.
That does not make betr’s service better. It makes it checkable, which is a narrower claim.
The licence: Tasmania, not the Northern Territory
For most of its life the business held a Northern Territory bookmaker licence, like most Australian corporate bookies. On 6 July 2026 betr was granted a Tasmanian Gaming Licence, in force from 7 July 2026 for five years, regulated by the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission. Bets are still accepted Australia-wide.
One warning: Tasmania does not publish operator licence numbers. If a review site displays a specific “betr licence number”, it invented it — nobody outside the regulator and the company has that string. The regulatory detail sits on our betr licence and regulator details page.
This is not the American betr
Two unrelated companies use the name, and it is the most common mix-up in search results.
- betr.com.au is the Australian licensed bookmaker, ASX: BBT, fixed odds and tote on racing and sport, regulated in Tasmania.
- betr.app is a United States fantasy and pick’em product, launched with Jake Paul’s involvement, regulated state by state under an entirely different framework.
Check the domain before you trust a number. Withdrawal limits, deposit rules, identity checks and complaint routes all differ, and none of the American figures transfer. A US help article quoting a minimum cash-out describes a product Australians cannot legally use. If a review does not name the domain it tested, assume it tested neither.
Sister brands: BlueBet and TopSport
Two other names sit under the same roof. BlueBet is the original 2015 brand; there is no separate BlueBet app any more, only the package-name fossil above. TopSport was bought outright, the deal closing 1 April 2025 with customers migrated onto the betr platform, and the trading name TOPSPORT has sat under the same ABN since 30 April 2025.
The name you will not find there is PointsBet. betr bid and lost: in September 2025 PointsBet went to Japanese group MIXI, which took roughly 66 per cent. Any page claiming betr owns PointsBet is a year out of date.
Transparent owner, unhappy customers
Knowing precisely who owns a bookmaker tells you nothing about how it treats you once your account is funded, and betr’s public ratings are poor by any measure.
| Platform | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 1.8 / 5 | 26 |
| ProductReview.com.au | 1.2 / 5 | 71 |
The themes repeat across both: delayed or blocked payouts, document requests arriving after a win rather than at sign-up, accounts restricted after a good run, enquiries unanswered for weeks. Sample sizes are small and nobody posts a review when a withdrawal lands on time — but 92 per cent one-star on Trustpilot is not noise you wave away.
Our own assessment of the product is more positive, and we say why in the full betr sportsbook review. Still, a corporate structure this legible and a service reputation this weak can coexist. You win some. You lose more.
If payouts worry you, read the mechanics first: the three routes and realistic timing on betr withdrawal times, the checks that must clear before your first bet under AUSTRAC verification rules, and the phone lines on betr customer support contacts. Most punters here come for the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound markets on our betr racing markets page, and how betr compares with other Australian bookies puts ownership in context.
FAQ
Who owns betr?
betr is operated by betr Entertainment Aus Pty Ltd, ABN 42 607 521 835, whose parent is the ASX-listed betr Entertainment Limited (code BBT). Michael Sullivan is executive chairman, Matt Tripp a non-executive director; both co-founded betr in 2022.
Is betr Australian owned?
Yes. The parent is an ASX-listed Australian company headquartered in Melbourne, with offices in Darwin, Sydney and the Gold Coast. News Corp held an early stake from 2022 but sold out in October 2023.
Did betr buy PointsBet?
No. The takeover attempt failed in September 2025 and PointsBet was acquired by Japanese company MIXI, which took around 66 per cent. The two remain separate businesses.
Is betr the same as BlueBet?
Same company now. They merged on 1 July 2024, the consumer product was rebranded to betr on 14 August 2024, and the listed parent was renamed from BlueBet Holdings Ltd on 9 April 2025. The platform is still BlueBet’s, hence the Android package au.com.bluebet.
Is betr listed on the ASX?
The parent, betr Entertainment Limited, trades under the ticker BBT and has been listed since 2 July 2021, when it floated as BlueBet Holdings.
Is betr.com.au the same as betr.app?
No, they are unrelated companies sharing a name. betr.com.au is the Australian licensed bookmaker; betr.app is a US fantasy and pick’em service associated with Jake Paul. Different regulators, different rules, so US figures do not apply here.
Everything above comes from company disclosures, the ABN register and regulator announcements, cross-checked in September 2026 by this betr Australia review site. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than guess.
